Resetting the Nervous System with Mirror Breath
Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the most regulated one of all? Surprise! It’s your kiddo! Well, their nervous system, anyway.
Each week in our Singing Yogis class we include a special themed breath exercise. This week’s arctic “frosty breath” was a huge hit! And the best part is that you can do it at home! All you need is a mirror!
Step one: Take a gentle inhale through your nose.
Step two: Exhale a nice warm and slow “haaa” right onto the mirror.
Step three: Watch as your child’s eyes light up when they see the result, and repeat as many times as their little heart desires!
Not only is your child learning cause and effect, they are also gaining a visual reference to help them learn to breathe on purpose and with intention.
Why should we teach kids to breathe? The answer is simple: because the breath is a powerful and easily accessible tool! According to scientists, it only takes three deep breaths to reset your nervous system. That’s it. It’s kind of magical when you think about it; the human body is incredible! Not to mention, if you’re trying to raise emotionally intelligent humans, a regulated nervous system is going to be the key every time.
See for yourself: The next time your little one is having a hard time, take a few minutes to do some breathing together first, to help their body (and yours) feel calm. Once their body is calm and they feel safe, you’ll be amazed at how much easier problem solving can be! Plus, there is no right or wrong time to practice breathing with your child. It can be done any place, anytime, which means you can even teach it preventively so that they already have it in their toolbox when those meltdowns come to a head.
Don’t have a mirror? Try a window, or a spoon, or cup. Anything that is reflective, glass, or metal should do the trick.
