Student of the Month: Meet Hannah
We love our students! They inspire us, they challenge us, they make us laugh and smile. But most importantly, they are each wonderful, unique individuals getting ready to go out into the world and make amazing things happen! That’s why we are highlighting one of our amazing students every month.
This spring, we have three very special students to feature. They are each graduating seniors, headed off on new adventures after high school!
Meet this month's featured student: Hannah!
Hannah is a 2019 graduate of John Jay High School. She began taking cello lessons with Miss Rachel when she was just in fifth grade, before The Harmony Garden even existed! Watching her grow both as a musician and as a compassionate young lady with a zest for life and love of helping others has been an absolute joy.
When did you first get into music?
I first got into music at the age of 11. I originally wanted to play the violin but it did not feel powerful enough and the cello felt very powerful.
What do you enjoy most about playing music?
What I enjoy most about playing music is the moment when you play a piece of music for the last time. It is comparable to saying goodbye to someone. You will always remember the struggles but in the end, the beauty of the music shines through.
Do you have a favorite musical memory?
My favorite musical memory is when I figured out how to play one of my favorite pop songs at the time. I thought I was so cool!
What are some of your favorite pieces that you have learned?
One of the favorite pieces that I have learned is The Swan. I usually love to play loud and intense music but The Swan is so musically beautiful. My second favorite would absolutely be the Bach Prelude. The Prelude is one of the most iconic pieces that a cellist gets to perform. It definitely holds a special place in my heart. My third favorite piece that I have played is Gavotte, it was one of those pieces that fit just like a puzzle.
What are your post-high school plans?
My post-high school plans are to be attending SUNY Oneonta for early childhood and childhood education. My dream is to teach special education to those in need and will absolutely use music in my teaching.
How do you see music playing a role in your life as an adult?
I see music playing a role in my life as an adult because playing any instrument gives you the opportunity to express how you feel without any words and that is truly magical. I sometimes catch myself watching a movie and I can hear a cello playing the background music and a smile grows on my face!
