Navigating Seasons of Change with Music & Yoga
Fall is full of contrasts: unpredictably between cold and warm temperatures, still days and windy days, sunshine and rain. In many ways, the season transition reminds me of our little yogis! Growth is happening at an incredible pace, and both children and their loving adults can feel at the mercy of these forces of nature.
Practicing yoga can help us feel more at ease navigating this unpredictability. The poses and other activities we enjoyed support sensory regulation by providing a variety of sensory input. Sensory regulation, sensory integration, and sensory modulation, are all terms that refer to a person’s ability to regulate and process the stimuli they constantly receive from the environment and their own body.
Singing also has a special role in helping to regulate the nervous system by stimulating the vagus nerve. Because this nerve touches the vocal cords, singing, humming, and other vocalizations helps promote relaxation during times of stress.
And of course, we always finish our yoga practice with a little rest (savasana) which allows for the “integration” of all the work that has gone before, and to practice doing nothing, just being.
Singing Yogis asks you to come with an open mind and comfortable clothes ready for our yoga adventure together. Join us for an introductory class this fall - we can’t wait to see you on the mat!
By the way - Singing Yogis members receive free access to the Singing Yogis Pose Library, a collection of videos to support your practice at home! Here families will find single poses, short sequences, and entire mini-classes, all organized by exciting, imagination-rich themes.
