Student of the Month: Leila

We love our students! They inspire us, they challenge us, they make us laugh and smile. But most importantly, they are each wonderful, unique individuals getting ready to go out into the world and make amazing things happen! That’s why we are highlighting one of our amazing students every month.

Meet this month’s featured student: Leila! (and read her sister Mira’s feature here)

Leila began piano lessons in 2018, at the age of just four. She would peek in on her older sister’s piano lessons, and couldn’t wait to get to know the piano herself! She is a perfectionist who strives to get everything right, but also loves to make each piece her own through subtle changes that bring a storyline to life. Leila also enjoys writing her own songs, complete with lyrics, and always asks great questions about the piano and other instruments. She puts in so much effort between her lessons and we love her creativity. We suspect we have a budding multi-instrumentalist-singer-songwriter-scientist on our hands!

Q: What do you enjoy most about playing music?

A: I like how it makes me happy. I like the feeling of getting lost in another world, and how you’re in a paradise and you don’t want to leave it.

Q: Do you have a favorite musical memory?

A: I loved the feeling when I achieved my goal of playing Happy Birthday with an eye mask on (Leila set a goal of memorizing the song, and then played it blindfolded in her lesson!). And the feeling of joy after I play a recital.

Q: What is your favorite song to play?

A: That might be the hardest question! Honestly I can’t decide, but I do really like the Mill Twins. (For our upcoming spring recital, she chose two pieces, both incidentally with “mill” in the title, and calls them collectively “The Mill Twins.”)

Q: What is a song you would like to learn to play?

A: The Super Mario Theme. Also music from Encanto, especially “We Don’t Talk about Bruno.”

Q: What do you want to be when you grow up?

A: I want to be a scientist. I want to study weather and climate, and also want to be a chemist and study cures for diseases and stuff.

Q: What is your favorite color?

A: Teal or aquamarine. I like a tropical violet-purple, and a pixie-pink, which is like a really light pink sprinkled with stardust or gold specks.

Q: What animal would you be, if you were not a human?

A: Well, I know that my cats are really, really spoiled, but I don’t want to be a cat. Does mermaid count as an answer? OR a mixie - that’s a pixie that can transform into what ever mystical creature or animal she wants to.

Q: If you could have any superpower what would it be?

A: A super power that would help people whenever possible. The super power to have any super power whenever I wanted!
