Student of the Month: Emma

We love our students! They inspire us, they challenge us, they make us laugh and smile. But most importantly, they are each wonderful, unique individuals getting ready to go out into the world and make amazing things happen! That’s why we are highlighting one of our amazing students every month.

This spring, we have a particularly special student to feature: Emma!

Emma is a 2020 graduate of John Jay High School.  She began taking cello lessons with Miss Rachel when she was just in fifth grade. Watching her grow as a musician and into strong, caring young woman has been an honor and joy. She always has a riveting tale of a close call at a recent volleyball game or a close call on her jet ski. We wish her all the best in the future!

When did you first get into music?

I first started playing the cello in 5th grade and I have been taking lessons with Rachel ever since then.

What do you enjoy most about playing music?

The thing I enjoy most about playing the cello is how calming it can be.

Do you have a favorite musical memory?

One of my favorite musical memories is when I was playing on stage at a concert for high school and we sounded so put together. At the end of the piece I looked up and saw my orchestra teacher smiling ear to ear and then she told us she had gotten goosebumps from our playing.

What are some of your favorite pieces that you have learned?

My absolute favorite piece that I have learned is Peer Gynt In the Hall of the Mountain King. It is such a fun piece to play and listen to, and my orchestra teacher told us what the piece was about, which helped to get more into the piece.

What are your post-high school plans?

I plan to attend cosmetology school in the fall.

How do you see music playing a role in your life as an adult?

I see myself playing for fun and using it to help decompress
