Wunderkeys Preschool Piano FAQ’s

What is Wunderkeys?

Wunderkeys provides an age-appropriate, hands-on, story-based, and fun approach that encourages exploration of the piano and development of many musical concepts that children need to grasp before learning to read traditional music notation.

An encouraging first experience in music lessons is critical to your child’s long-term enjoyment of the piano, or any other instrument. Wunderkeys Piano for Preschoolers is that and more!

Lessons are 30 minutes in length and one-on-one with an instructor.  Parents are always welcome to sit in!

Why are piano lessons beneficial for young children?

Numerous studies reveal the piano to be a powerful tool for developing mathematical thinking.  A “window of opportunity” exists during the preschool years when learning the piano can facilitate neural connections in the brain needed for mathematical and spacial understanding.

Some specific skills developed by early piano lessons include: symbol-to-sound recognition, finger independence and coordination, aural awareness, pattern recognition and completion, number recognition, counting, one-to-one correspondence, and more!  These are all pre-requisites for the reading and math skills used in Kindergarten and beyond.

Musical skills gained in the Wunderkeys program include: recognition and production of high & low sounds, recognition and production of long & short sounds, the ability to play simple patterns on the black keys, directional movement in note reading, aural recognition of rhythms, and reading quarter notes, half notes, and whole notes.

Plus, playing an instrument boosts a child’s confidence, self-esteem, and self-expression!

What happens in a typical Wunderkeys lesson?

Each lesson is packed with fun and learning!  During a Wunderkeys lesson, your child will participate in musical activities both on and off the piano bench; created to build confidence, increase enjoyment, and solidify musical concepts.  Songs, rhymes, games, and imaginative activities keep your child engaged and begging for the next lesson! Plus, teacher/student duets allow your child to play music from day one.

What will my child learn in each of the Wunderkeys lesson books?

Check out our main Wunderkeys page for an outline of the content of each of the three Wunderkeys Preschool lesson books.

What is my role as a parent?

The Wunderkeys method makes it easy to assist your child at home even if you have no musical experience yourself. The books guide you and your child through several fun activities each week designed to reinforce what was learned in the lesson and to create “bonding on the bench” time at home.  You can help your child be successful by providing a home instrument and by adding regular time at the piano into your family’s routines.

Do Wunderkeys students have any performance opportunities?

Yes! Twice a year we hold special in-studio “piano parties” just for our Wunderkeys students.  They have the opportunity to play something for their parents and peers (or, if they are not ready yet, they are welcome to be supportive audience members), meet other musicians their age, and of course celebrate with a little reception afterwards.

After my child has finished the Wunderkeys series, what comes next?

On average, it takes a child a “school year” to fully complete the 3-book program. Graduates of Wunderkeys Piano for Preschoolers continue their learning as they move into a Primer Level piano method book.

How do I know if my child is ready for Wunderkeys piano lessons?

We love that Wunderkeys makes learning the piano accessible to children at a younger age than most other learning approaches.  That said, readiness for piano lessons can vary widely among preschool and Kindergarten age children. Little ones develop and change rapidly!  Wunderkeys is designed to help them grow and learn, and creates the most feelings of success when children begin lessons once they are ready.

If you are interested in Wunderkeys for your child, let us know! We always hold complementary “meet & greet” lessons with all of our prospective students. This casual session will give us and you an idea as to your child’s readiness for piano lessons, or if waiting a few months would be best.  Plus, we’ll be able to answer all of your questions and, of course, show your child some basics so he or she can go home ready to rock the piano keys!

Do I need to buy or rent an instrument?

Practicing outside of the lesson is critical to the student’s growth and success.  If you do not have an instrument, we will be happy to help you find a high-quality instrument to purchase or rent.

Do I need to buy books or sheet music?

Nope!  We’ll provide the student with all the books & sheet music he or she requires.
